PROPOSAL
Whilst travelling along the the North East coast of Norfolk a saw a performance piece called THE WALKING ELEPHANT on the beach of West Runton. The piece was created by Jeremy Moore, it was a structure made into the shape of an elephant that, using man power, would walk along the shore line. Researching into this piece I discovered that it represents a 700,000 year old elephant fossil that was found in the cliffs on that beach in 1995.
I went back to this beach and begin collecting things along the shore line; shells and rocks. Researching into West Runton beach I found that the beach is known for its fossil collecting. Whilst I was collecting I discovered a fossil named a Belemnite. The belemnite is between 252 - 66 million years old.
I began thinking about these things I’d collected along the shore line, and I realised that they were very overlooked objects that could be found. For this project I’ve began looking into Charles Darwin’s evolutionary drawings as a basis to begin. Using the things that I collected on the West Runton beach I want to create observational drawings and paintings. I’m planning on doing small, detailed drawings and paintings, focusing a lot on the detail of them. Previously I would do large scale paintings, but I feel as these objects have a lot of detail and are quite small, expanding them in size would take the delicate nature of the object away from it. I will be working towards a series of paintings for the degree show which will evolve and develop through the module through my practice.
