For experimentation I developed on the idea of the Fossil within the space. The space wasn't suited to the shape that I wanted to create. But I was able to find a mathematical equation called the Fibonacci Sequence which I want to use to create the pulling in sensation I had when I first encountered the space.

"The Fibonacci Sequence is the series of numbers:
0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, ...
The next number is found by adding up the two numbers before it.

The Fibonacci sequence is a mathematical sequence that appears within nature. The sequence creates a spiral that starts small and becomes larger and wider. It appears from the smallest thing as a sea shell to the stretch of a galaxy.

When I first encountered the space at County Hall, I realised I was drawn to the circular space within the County Hall's disabled car park. When I first became in contact with the space I was drawn to the center of the tiled pattern. I sat down within the space and took in the buildings around it, the building was separated into three parts which all surrounded and overlooked the space.
What I noticed with the space was that the visitors of County Hall weren't experiencing this same sensation of being pulled into the center of the tiles. I wondered if this was because they were so busy with their visit to the building, or whether I was finding something so interesting within an overlooked space. I realised I wanted people to have that same sensation I did when I first encountered the space. Using the Fibonacci sequence I will create a spiral pattern which will, hopefully, create a pulling in sensation for visitors and they will begin to notice the space. |
The work.
I want to incorporate the Fibonacci sequence within the space I was in, I realised that I could create a pulling in sensation for the visitors of County Hall by making a spiral shape within the space.
1. Using a image I had taken of the space, I numbered each tile singularly. Using this method I was going to highlight each tile that appeared within the sequence.

However, once I actually completed this method, I realised it was unsuccessful. The tiles didn't create the spirial shape that I was looking for within the space. The pattern was was nonexistent, it just liked an erratic choice of tiles.
Development.
Although the first attempt for using the Fibonacci sequence within the space was unsuccessful, I was still really interested in using the mathematical equation within my work.
In development, I decided to number the rings within the space. I labelled each ring with the number that appears within the sequence. Due to the space being 19 rings wide I had to work out which number came next within the sequence:

The sequence worked out that ring 19, the very outer edge of the space, was number 6765 within the sequence.

The sequence worked out that ring 19, the very outer edge of the space, was number 6765 within the sequence.
Within each ring I highlighted the number that appeared within the sequence. Making sure that when one ring ended, the next ring made contact with it to create a shape. This created a perfect spiral shape within the space, however, I felt it wasn't strong enough. There were so many plain tiles that I felt it would of been distracting for the viewers to have those untouched.
I decided to expand the piece by mirroring the sequence within the space. I followed the same pattern as it did in the beginning. This began filling the space more effectively, creating a stronger pulling in sensation within the space.
Another sequence was added within the space, developing the pulling in sensation.
I decided to finish the development with four (4) sequences featuring within the space. I still wanted there to be space in between the spirals to create that pulling in sensation. I felt that it had the perfect amount of spiral within the space.
These aren't the colours that will be used within the space, but are used to represent which tiles will the coloured within the space and which will be left.
