county hall presentation - fossil
County Hall Exhibition
2) Upon touring the exterior of County Hall I was pulled towards this tiled pattern on the grounds just outside the entrance. The entire building had this rigid skeleton that didn't appeal to me, yet this tiled pattern stood away from the building and had a completely different feel to it. What I realised with the County Hall was that I couldn’t see my work inside the building, but when I saw this I was inspired to bring my work outside. Working outside wasn’t something I had never done before, however, I was so drawn to the space I couldn’t see myself working anywhere else.
3) Over the summer of 2015 I spent a large portion of my time travelling around the coast of Norwich, collecting objects, such a fossils and rocks. And what I noticed with the tiles was that there was a reflection of the colours of rocks and the tiles. This got me thinking about incorporating what I had collected that summer with the space.
4) Through research I started looking at other kinds of fossils as I am working with Belemnite fossils in my other modules. Ammonites are one of the most commonly known fossils, possessing the typically ribbed spiral-form shell. These creatures became extinct with the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago.
5) What I noticed whilst looking at the Ammonite and the tiled space was that they reflected a similar spiral shape. This got me thinking about bringing the two together.
6) I began designing how I want to execute my ideas and the composition of the space. I decided I wanted to turn the space into a giant Ammonite that can be viewed from inside the County Hall. I’ve been faced with a few problems when it comes to wanting to create this piece. The space is actually a handicapable car park so I need to use materials that will not cause problems for the visitors of the County Hall. Also, with me working directly onto the space rather than bringing the work into it, I have to also use a material that will be easily removed once the exhibition is completed.
7) This has lead me onto the experimentation of materials. I realised I was going to have to experiment away from the County Hall before I took the materials there. Within the Lantern space I created an installation using charcoal as my first material. Drawing directly onto the floor of the space, as I would at the County Hall.
8) Although Charcoal did work well with the effect I was looking for when I first executed my idea, I did find faults with it which means I won’t be using it for the piece at the county hall. The material was difficult to remove from the surface so putting them on a surface of the County Hall isn’t suitable because I don’t want to vandalise the property of the Hall.
9) This situation has had to bring me back to reconsider how I’m going to compose this piece in an effective way which also meets the requirements I set before. I’ve began considering the idea of use a material that can be pulled off rather than a material that will be scrubbed off later. So with this thought in mind I’ve began researching into different kinds of tape that I will experiment with before going up to county hall. This includes electrical tape and gorilla tape. I’m going to need something that will come off easily after the exhibition is over but also stick to the surface I am working with.
10) Thank you for listening, do you have any questions?
