Kelly mark
27/02/2016
Ikon Gallery, Birmingham
Kelly Mark
108 Leyton Ave
Ikon, Tower Room.
Upon entering the Tower Room you are greeted with a large scale projection in a black room, similar to Dinh Q. Le found in the First Floor Galleries. It is a split-screen projection of the artist, Kelly Mark, having a conversation with herself. The two sit across from one another (Everything and Nothing); play solitaire, drink whiskey and smoke whilst having a conversation.
It was developed over a period when Mark was living in the social isolation of a quasi-suburban limbo on Toronto’s eastern edge (Ikon 2016).
Everything and Nothing are manufactured as opposite but asymmetrical roles performed by Mark. The piece is a reflection of the insecurity of having no one to talk to but yourself, just as Mark would have had whilst living in isolation.
