Experimentation
Moving forward from the canvases I began looking into found materials to create paintings onto. From this I found used packaging paper which was very worn and used, which reflected how I felt about Charls Darwin's evoluntionary drawings.
I began pouring coffee onto the surface to create a staining method. What was interesting was that the coffee collected into puddles within the creases on the page.
Once the paper had dried and was stained, I removed it from the drawing board. What I had noticed was that the coffee had seeped through the paper and stained the board underneath it. I found the stains on the boards (See images below) much more interesting than the paper that I had been working on. The different tones and textures that had stained across the board had much more about them. The brown tones of the board reflected a similar tone to the one that is within the sketchbook I was working in.
The paper didn't work due to how fragile it had become when it was made wet, so it couldn't be worked on further. I did not develop these pieces further.
However, I was inspired to work on a much more solid surface than the paper I had previously worked on. Inspired by the stains that were on the boards, I was influenced to begin looking at working on MDF boards and develop this idea further.
